Dress Code

Formal Dress

Members, guests and visitors are expected to wear smart trousers with a jacket and tie or cravat.

Unless relaxed dress is permitted (see below) or a notice is displayed to a contrary effect, gentlemen should wear formal dress throughout the Club.

Relaxed Dress

Relaxed dress should be interpreted as a collared shirt (without tie and jacket) and excludes all denim and sporting wear, including track suits and trainers, or other overly casual clothes.

Relaxed dress for Members wearing uniform should be interpreted as appropriate seasonal working dress. The tie may be discarded when a short-sleeved open-necked shirt is worn but must be worn with a long sleeved-shirt and with a pullover.

Relaxed dress is permitted at weekends and public holidays* (see below) in public areas and rooms. Relaxed dress is also permitted every day at breakfast and at all times in the Running Horse.

* Weekends are defined as 4.30pm on Fridays until 10am on the following Monday, or the day before a public holiday until the day after a public holiday, with the exception of Battle of Britain Sunday, Remembrance Sunday and other such days as may be prescribed and promulgated by the Board of Trustees.

Ladies

Ladies should wear forms of dress consistent with the above directions. Smart trousers may be worn.

Children

Members responsible for children and young persons on the premises should ensure that the above directions on formal and relaxed dress are interpreted sensibly and with due consideration to other Members.

Transit to and from Bedrooms

The above dress restrictions do not apply to Members who wish to gain access to their rooms without using any of the public rooms.

Public Rooms

Items of outer clothing, shopping bags, umbrellas, radios, mobile telephones and audio/visual recording/playback equipment are not to be taken into any public rooms.

With the exception of the Study, working papers and brief cases are not permitted in other public areas.
